Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Why Early Testing Matters

The Nerve, Muscle & Joint Health Newsletter
Understanding Your Condition
Carpal tunnel syndrome happens when the median nerve becomes compressed as it passes through the wrist. This can lead to symptoms such as numbness, tingling, pain, weakness, or clumsiness in the hand and fingers. Many people notice symptoms at night, while driving, or when using their hands for work or daily activities.
Getting the right diagnosis early is important. When carpal tunnel syndrome is identified sooner, treatment can begin before the problem becomes more serious. Early testing may help prevent worsening symptoms, ongoing nerve irritation, loss of strength, and more lasting problems with hand function.
At Hands-On EMG, we use advanced diagnostic tools such as Nerve Testing (EMG/NCS) and Musculoskeletal Ultrasound to help better understand what is causing your symptoms. These tests provide different types of information. One helps show how the nerve is working, while the other helps show what the nerve looks like and whether there may be swelling or compression around the wrist. Together, they can provide clearer answers and help guide the next steps in your care.
If you are experiencing hand numbness, tingling, pain, or weakness, do not ignore it! Getting answers early can help you move toward the right treatment and reduce the risk of future complications.

Simple Tips and Gentle Stretches for Carpal Tunnel Symptoms
If you have hand numbness, tingling, or wrist discomfort, a few simple daily habits may help reduce strain on the wrist and hand. While exercises do not replace proper medical evaluation, they can sometimes help support comfort and mobility.

Wrist Flexor Stretch
Extend one arm in front of you with your palm facing up. With your other hand, gently pull the fingers back until you feel a mild stretch in the forearm and wrist. Hold for 15–20 seconds and repeat 2–3 times on each side.

Wrist Extensor Stretch
Extend one arm in front of you with your palm facing down. Use your other hand to gently bend the hand downward until you feel a stretch along the top of the forearm. Hold for 15–20 seconds and repeat 2–3 times.

Shake Out Your Hands
If your hands feel stiff or tingly, gently shake them out for a few seconds. This is especially helpful after repetitive activity or long periods of typing or gripping.
Did You Know?
Symptoms that feel like carpal tunnel are not always caused by the wrist. In some cases, nerve irritation in the neck, shoulder, or elsewhere in the arm can create similar symptoms. That is why proper testing can be so important in finding the real cause of numbness, tingling, weakness, or hand discomfort and helping guide the most appropriate care.
